Microneedling: how it works

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment designed to improve texture, tone and the appearance of common concerns such as acne scars, fine lines and enlarged pores.

What is microneedling?

During treatment, a device containing very fine sterile needles creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny channels trigger the skin’s natural repair response, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin.

Over time, this renewal process can help the skin look smoother, firmer and more even.

What can microneedling help with?

Microneedling may be recommended for:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and early signs of ageing
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Mild pigmentation concerns
  • Certain types of superficial scarring

Treatment depth and technique can be adjusted depending on the area being treated and the individual skin concern.

What happens during treatment?

The skin is cleansed and, where appropriate, a topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand. The microneedling device is then passed across the treatment area in a controlled pattern.

A session commonly takes around 30–60 minutes, depending on the area treated.

Is there downtime?

Redness, warmth and mild swelling are common immediately after treatment and can resemble a mild sunburn. These effects usually settle over the following few days.

The skin may also feel dry or slightly sensitive while it recovers, so gentle skincare and appropriate sun protection are particularly important.

When will I see results?

Skin renewal happens gradually. Some people notice an improvement in texture within several weeks, while collagen remodelling can continue for several months.

A course of treatments may be recommended when addressing concerns such as acne scarring or more noticeable texture changes.

Is microneedling suitable for everyone?

Not necessarily. Active skin infections, certain inflammatory skin conditions, problems with wound healing and some medications may affect whether treatment is appropriate.

A consultation allows your practitioner to assess your skin, discuss your goals and determine whether microneedling is a suitable option for you.
